While attending college, I received a grant from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to cover tuition and fees.
In 1984, I was accepted into the journalism graduate school at New York University, but chose not to attend because of lack of funds.

While in Georgia, I won three awards from the Georgia Sports Writers Association in the 50,000
and under category.
